Hungry Ridge, RA 1207

Hungry Ridge is a spur ridge in the southeast part of the Okanogan Range, between McFarland and Squaw Creeks. It includes Hunter Mountain, but not Hungry Mountain, which is north of McFarland Creek in a smaller roadless area. At its eastern margin above the Methow River, there are huge, glacially-rounded bedrock boulders called mutton rocks (French, roche mutoneé) for their resemblance to sheep. Vegetation at low elevations is primarily bitterbrush - sagebrush - steppe, except in rocky areas where desert-buckwheats and mosses dominate. On some north-facing slopes, pure ponderosa pine forests are dominant, which is exceptional for the lack of Douglas fir encroachment.
